ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
UNITY ISIZWE TRADE ACADEMY is to train Artisans in technical and Vocational Skills in partnership with the Industry for a growing economy.
Skills Programme
No previous experience is required you only need to have grade 10 or level 2 Literacy and numeracy. UITA provides a platform for school leavers, people wanting a career change, preparation for a trade test or Qualified artisans who want to enhance their skill levels. We also cater for engineering students that need practical training.
- Students need to be 16 years and older.
- A bar-coded id document or passport.
- Must book in advance.
- Matric or no matric you will be accommodated.
- Submit original proof of payment for your chosen field of learning.
- Must have a burning desire to better themselves.
We equip students with the essential skills in a workshop environment over a minimum period of 10 days or more, depending on the chosen course. candidates are then equipped with the practical knowledge that can be applied in the workshop from day one. candidates are issued with a certificate of completion and also directed to employment channels to seek employment.
Special Skills Program
Special Skills Programs have been created by UITA on request of business to address very specific skills needs. Some of these special courses are registered with the Setas and some are not registered as they are specially created for an occupational outcome. Students are issued with a certificate of completion and a statement of results with the unit standards covered detailed where applicable.
Skills Program
Is an accredited program that that runs from a month to a period of three months for specific unit standards as per the client need. It can be funded program or non funded program. In completion the learner receive a Statement of Results for the Unit Standards completed and found competent. No previous experience is required but basic entry criteria apply. .
Apprenticeship Programs (QCTO)
Apprenticeships is a minimum of 24 months to 36 months Competency Based Modular Training that includes workplace of not less than 12 month placement, both without breaks and culminate in a Trade Testing . this route result in a red seal qualification as a fully Qualified Artisan.
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY FOR ARPL TRADE TEST QUALIFYING CRITERIA CATEGORIES:
A. Minimum three (3) years relevant work experience within South Africa and N2 certificate including Relevant Trade Theory or |
B. Minimum three (3) years relevant work experience within South Africa and Relevant Engineering NQF Level 3 Certificate or |
C. Minimum three (3) years relevant work experience within South Africa and Technical Grade 12 with Maths, Engineering Science and Related Theory Subject or |
D. Minimum Eighteen (18) months relevant work experience within South Africa with Relevant Engineering NCV Level 4 Certificate or |
E. Minimum Eighteen (18) months relevant work experience within South Africa and Relevant and Directly Related to the Trade Theory Subjects) N6 certificate or National Technical Diploma (S or N Stream) or |
F. Minimum four (4) years’ work experience within South Africa with Grade 9 (Standard 7) or |
G. Minimum three (3) years relevant work experience within South Africa and successful completion of an ARPL Toolkits Assessment for the trades that already have toolkits in place – eg: Electrician. |
H. Successful completion of the merSETA registered NQF Level 2, 3 and 4 Trade Related Learnerships with minimum two (2) years, inclusive of the institutional and workplace components. |
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED WITH THIS APPLICATION (CERTIFIED BY THE COMMISSIONER OF OATH): NB! Certified documents must not be older than three (3) months. |
1. Clear originally certified copy of Identity Document |

3. Clear original or originally certified service letter on a company letter head (with company registration number) as proof of experience within South Africa with detailed daily duties, start date and signed off by the duly authorised person. |
4. Where applicable, documentary proof showing that the applicant is legally in South Africa with exclusion of medical permit. |
5. A candidate, who attempted a trade test and passed at least 50% of the number of tasks given, will be given recognition for those tasks. The recognition will be retained by the candidate for a maximum of 3 attempts or 18 months from the date of successful completion of the trade task whichever comes first. Thereafter, no credit or recognition of tasks applies. |
6. The Academy will communicate the outcome of the application directly with the applicant and not to third party. |
NB: RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE MEANS ACCORDING TO TRAINING SCHEDULES FOR THE TRADE.
Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL)
ARPL allows people who have worked for many years in a specific field without a qualification or with an incomplete qualification, to have access to a trade test through a process of recognition of prior workplace learning.
ARPL also allows those who have not been successful after three attempts at a trade test to access the trade test through the ARPL process.
In order to qualify for ARPL, the following are the requirements:
- The regulations state that a person must have proven record of having worked for a number of years or more in a specific trade to be allowed to This period is defined in the individual ARPL tool kits for the trade.
- The regulation also allows for those who have been unsuccessful after three trade test attempts as a registered artisan on an apprenticeship or NQF
- The person must have an employable skill in a recognised registered
- Having met the above criteria, the person can apply to a registered trade test center or a registered decentralised trade test centre for.
The person will be required to:
- Build and provide a portfolio of evidence that contains evidence such as employment letters from employers, payslips, performance reviews, job specs etc that will prove work has taken
- The person will have to undergo a panel interview with industry experts to determine if the person knows what they say they
- If approved for ARPL after the interview, the person will undergo the equivalent of a trade test to determine gaps in knowledge or
- These gaps will then inform the number of days or weeks the person will have to undergo training to address the knowledge and experience gaps in order to do the Trade
- Once the training has been completed, the provider will apply for an ARPL Trade test date from
- On the specified trade test day, the candidate will undergo:
- A theory examination
- A 2-day practical assessment
- Upon successful completion the person will be issued with a Red Seal trade test certificate and be called a fully qualified “Red Seal” artisan.
- If the person fails a task or two etc the tasks that were successful remain and the person will have to return to the trade test centre to successfully complete the “not yet competent” Tasks until a 100% pass rate for practical is achieved.
- After 3 failed attempts, the person will have to re-apply for a full trade test.
